Mid City Steel Corp

Camp Metalhead is an innovative summer metalworking program for high school students at the STEEL YARD in
Providence, RI. Funded by the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association Foundation and supported by MID CITY STEEL,
this year the camp gave eight young people the chance to learn metalworking skills in a fun and supportive environment. On
top of learning basic welding and creative metal fabrication guided by STEEL YARD instructors, students were encouraged
to place those skills and processes within the context of the history of the profession through visiting local manufacturers,
small businesses, and artists' studios. MID CITY opened their doors to Camp Metalhead, giving the students a
behind-the-scenes introduction to the life cycle of steel and other metals and even gave them the chance to take a spin
operating the cranes! During the second week of the program, students designed and fabricated the decorative panels of an
information kiosk for Olneyville Square. Camp Metalhead is a significant addition to the offerings at the STEEL YARD, which
include low-cost community courses in the industrial arts, free classes for local youth, and affordable studio access to our
tools and equipment.
